Winter
November–February (cool, comfortable weather; busiest and most expensive).
June–August (very hot, fewer tourists, best deals on hotels and tours).
March–May: Temperatures warm from mild to hot by late spring. Pleasant mornings and evenings make it a good shoulder season for sightseeing and day trips to Giza and Saqqara.
A month-long Islamic observance with shifting Gregorian dates (moves ~11 days earlier each year). Daily life and business hours change; evenings are lively with special meals.
Usually held in November; attracts regional and international filmmakers and critics.
Typically in late January–February; one of the largest book fairs in the Arab world.
A springtime public holiday rooted in ancient Egyptian tradition, celebrated with picnics across the city, particularly by the Nile.
Two major Islamic holidays with changing dates based on the lunar calendar; family-focused celebrations and travel spikes.
Cairo has a desert climate: very hot, dry summers and mild winters with very little annual rainfall. Bring sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, light breathable clothing for hot months, and a light jacket for winter evenings. Always carry bottled water when sightseeing; consider a small travel umbrella or light rain jacket in winter months if showers are forecast. Air-conditioned transport and indoor attractions are plentiful—use them to escape midday heat in summer.
Cairo hotel and service prices change with international tourist seasons, local events, and the academic/business calendar. Peak demand occurs when weather is mild and around major cultural events, pushing up rates at mid- to high-range hotels; conversely, summer months (when temperatures spike) tend to bring lower room rates and more promotional offers. Weekends (Friday–Saturday in Egypt) can be busier for local leisure stays, and international holidays such as Eid or dates surrounding major conferences or festivals can temporarily raise prices. City center and Giza/Pyramids-adjacent hotels command a premium year-round. Bookings made well in advance for December–February and major festivals will secure the best availability and prices.
Insider-råd som hjelper deg få mest mulig ut av besøket
Cairo's transport mix includes an affordable metro system, buses, ride-hailing apps (Uber, Careem), registered taxis, and a large network of minibuses. Traffic can be heavy; plan extra time.
Visit the Giza Plateau at sunrise for cooler temperatures, softer light for photos, and smaller crowds. Combine that early visit with a mid-morning stop at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) for modern exhibits and climate-controlled comfort. Buy a local SIM at the airport for maps and ride apps, and carry small Egyptian pound notes for tips and market purchases.
