Fall
Spring and Fall (holidays and mild weather)
Winter and parts of Summer (outside major festivals and religious holidays)
March–May: Mild temperatures, wildflowers on surrounding hills, and many religious and civic events.
One of the major Jewish pilgrim periods, with many Israelis traveling to Jerusalem for family seders and visits to holy sites.
Held most years in March, an internationally-attended marathon course that passes historic and modern parts of the city.
Israel’s Independence Day and the city’s own celebration create parades, ceremonies and public events (April–May timeframe).
A summer cultural draw featuring Israeli and international films, usually held in July.
Nighttime light-art installations illuminating the Old City and public spaces—usually in late spring/early summer.
Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot fall in the fall; major pilgrimage and local observance times.
December draws Christian pilgrims to Bethlehem and Jerusalem’s Christian Quarter; services and processions are concentrated around the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
When Ramadan falls in the Gregorian calendar, the Muslim Quarter and East Jerusalem host nightly iftars and lively markets; Eid al-Fitr marks the end with celebrations.
Jerusalem sits about 750–800 m above sea level: sun can feel strong even when temperatures are mild. Pack layered clothing for day/night variations, comfortable walking shoes for cobbles and stairs, sunscreen and a hat for the summer, and a waterproof jacket for winter rains. Expect cooler evenings in most seasons.
Hotel and accommodation prices in Jerusalem fluctuate with religious holidays, major events and seasonal weather. Peak rates occur during major Jewish holidays (Passover, Sukkot, High Holidays) and popular tourist windows (Spring and Fall). International festivals (Jerusalem Film Festival, Light Festival) and the Jerusalem Marathon can push short-term rates higher. Summer sees steady tourist demand—especially in July—though extreme heat can make some travelers avoid it, which sometimes moderates prices except around festivals. Winter generally offers the best weekday value except around Christmas and New Year when Christian pilgrims increase demand.
Insider-råd der hjælper dig med at få mest ud af dit besøg
Use a mix of walking, light rail, buses, sheruts (shared minibuses) and taxis. The Old City is pedestrian-only; some sites require short uphill walks.
Book accommodations and major-site tours well in advance for Passover, Sukkot, and Christmas weeks. Get a local SIM or eSIM, download offline maps and key apps, and bring comfortable shoes—the Old City and nearby neighborhoods are best explored on foot.
