Winter
Late November–February (cool, dry season)
May–October (rainy season)
March–May. Temperatures rise through March and April, peaking in April when Bangkok hits its hottest period. April also hosts Songkran (Thai New Year), a nationwide water festival that is lively in Bangkok but brings crowds and some transport disruption.
Mid-April water festival celebrated nationwide with large-scale street water fights, religious ceremonies, and family gatherings. In Bangkok, key zones include Khao San Road, Silom, and central city areas.
Usually in November (full moon of the 12th lunar month). People float decorated baskets (krathongs) on rivers and waterways to pay respects and make wishes.
Late January–February (date varies). Yaowarat (Chinatown) hosts vibrant parades, lion dances, food markets, and fireworks.
Typically held in May. A ceremonial event marking the start of the rice-growing season; held at Sanam Luang in Bangkok with traditional rituals and royal presence.
Pack light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and a compact umbrella or rain jacket. Stay hydrated and avoid midday heat in spring/summer. Wear a light layer for air-conditioned malls and evening rooftop venues during winter. Check flood alerts during the rainy season and leave extra time for journeys when heavy rains are forecast.
Hotel and flight prices in Bangkok vary with weather and major festivals. Peak rates run from late November through February (cool, dry season) and spike again around Christmas/New Year and during Songkran in April. The wet season (May–October) is generally the most budget-friendly time for accommodation and some attractions, though prices can still jump around major events and long weekends. Weekend rates near popular nightlife/entertainment areas can be higher year-round. Book well in advance for travel during high season and big events; look for last-minute bargains during heavy-rain periods but watch for cancellation policies.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Bangkok has efficient rapid transit (BTS Skytrain, MRT), extensive river boats, plentiful taxis and ride-hailing (Grab), and lively motorbike taxis. Traffic can be heavy—use the Skytrain/MRT and river taxis to save time.
Plan temple visits and popular attractions early in the morning to avoid crowds and heat, use river taxis to bypass road traffic, buy a local SIM at the airport for on-the-go navigation and ride-hailing, and carry small bills/coins for markets and tuk-tuks.
