March–May: Temperatures rise from cool to mild, trees and parks green up, and outdoor patios begin to open. Variable weather—early March can still feel wintry; by late April and May you'll generally have pleasant days.
Oakbrook Center hosts rotating seasonal promotions, sales, and family-friendly activities throughout the year, including summer events and holiday programming.
Seasonal farmers markets and local vendor pop-ups (typically spring through early fall) where you can sample local produce and prepared foods.
A short drive from Oak Brook, Morton Arboretum runs marquee seasonal events that attract regional visitors, including spring blooms and winter light installations.
Local villages and shopping centers decorate for the holidays—late November and December feature tree-lighting ceremonies, seasonal music, and special store hours.
Oak Brook has a continental climate. Pack layers year-round. Summer: light breathable fabrics and rain protection for pop-up storms. Spring/Fall: layers and a light jacket. Winter: heavy coat, insulated boots, gloves, hat, and traction-friendly footwear; allow extra travel time in snow/ice. Check local forecasts before driving.
Oak Brook is an affluent Chicago suburb with a mix of upscale shopping (Oakbrook Center), corporate offices, and resort-style hotels. Hotel and rental prices rise around major shopping holidays (late November–December), weekends tied to corporate events and conferences, and during nearby Chicago events (e.g., major conventions, sports events, large concerts). Off-peak weekdays in Winter and shoulder seasons often offer the best rates. Expect higher restaurant prices around the mall and hotel corridors; suburban dinner checks are generally lower than downtown Chicago but higher than smaller Illinois towns.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Driving, rideshares, and regional transit each work; choose based on itinerary. A car gives the most flexibility for suburban exploring and visiting nearby attractions; regional transit and rideshare are fine for short visits or if you plan to connect to Chicago.
Base yourself near Oakbrook Center for walkable access to shopping and restaurants, then rent a car for day trips to Morton Arboretum, downtown Chicago, or nearby suburbs. Check event calendars (mall, arboretum, and village sites) and book hotels well in advance for holiday weekends and major Chicago events that affect regional availability.
