Fall
JuneโAugust plus late-November/December holidays (highest hotel rates and busiest attractions)
Januaryโearly February (post-holiday low rates) and occasionally late-February/early March
MarchโMay. Temperatures typically range from cool to warm (40sโ60sยฐF/5โ20ยฐC early, warming into the 60sโ70sยฐF/15โ25ยฐC by May). Blooms in parks, Cherry blossoms in Brooklyn Botanic Garden and across the boroughs.
Huge global celebration on December 31 with ball drop and street closures. Expect massive crowds and security checkpoints; many surrounding hotels and restaurants are booked well in advance.
Annual parade on Thanksgiving morning (late November). Routes through Midtown bring large crowds and early street closures; great for families.
June. Parades, parties, and neighborhood festivalization (especially in Greenwich Village and Chelsea). One of the worldโs largest Pride celebrations.
Typically in April. Major film festival with premieres, talks, and neighborhood screenings, drawing industry visitors.
Held in February and September. Multiple shows and industry events raise hotel and restaurant demand in Manhattan during those weeks.
Late Augustโearly September in Flushing Meadows, Queens. Big draw for sports fans and international visitors; expect busy transit to/from the venue.
Early November. The worldโs largest marathon courses through the five boroughs; many hotels fill early and transit is busier along the route.
October 31. Iconic costumed parade through Greenwich Village; lively nightlife and neighborhood celebrations.
Twice yearly (usually January/February and July). Hundreds of restaurants offer prix-fixe menus making it a great time to try top restaurants affordably.
Layering is key year-roundโwinters require warm outerwear, summers require lightweight breathable clothing and sun protection. Carry a compact umbrella and a light packable rain jacket in spring/fall. Check hourly forecasts for heat waves or snowstorms and plan transit accordingly.
New York City hotel prices fluctuate strongly with season, holidays, and major events. Peak demand occurs in summer (JuneโAugust) and during the late-November/December holiday period (Thanksgiving week, Christmas, New Yearโs Eve). Large conventions, fashion weeks (February and September), the United Nations General Assembly (usually September), the US Open (AugโSep), and major cultural events (Marathon, Tribeca) push rates higher at short notice. Midweek rates are often lower than weekend rates in Manhattan but can flip during conventions or weekend festivals. Budget travelers find the best deals in the quiet winter window after New Yearโs (Januaryโearly February) and sometimes in early March; shoulder seasons (late winter/early spring and late fall) can offer a balance of better prices and good weather. Book well in advance for high-season dates and major event weekends; last-minute discounts appear but are risky during peak times.
