Winter
Winter (peak visitor season including holidays and cruise-ship traffic)
Summer and early Fall (warmer, more humid, frequent discounts and deals)
March–May: Pleasant warm temperatures, lower humidity than summer, blooming tropical plants. Spring Break and some festivals can increase crowds in March and early April.
Late October: A wild, week-long costume parade and street party with themed events across the island.
July: Celebrates Ernest Hemingway’s life and legacy with look-alike contests, literary events, and athletic competitions.
January (usually): Multi-venue music festival featuring well-known and up-and-coming songwriters and performers.
Late April: Celebrates Key West’s quirky ‘independence’ with parades, live music, and community events.
June: One of the island’s liveliest LGBTQ+ celebrations with parades, parties, and community events.
Daily: A longstanding ritual at Mallory Square where street performers, vendors, and crowds gather to watch the sunset.
Key West has a tropical climate: winters are mild and dry, summers are hot, humid, and storm-prone. Hurricane season runs June–November (peak Aug–Sep). Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a light rain jacket for sudden showers, insect repellent for summer/fall, and layers for breezy winter evenings. Always check marine forecasts before boating or snorkeling.
Key West hotel and rental prices fluctuate strongly with seasonality and events. Peak rates occur in Winter and early Spring (December–April) when northerners escape cold weather and cruise ships bring day-trippers; holiday weeks, Presidents' Day weekend and spring-break weeks push rates highest. Popular events (Fantasy Fest, Hemingway Days, Songwriters Festival) raise prices and reduce availability. Summer and early Fall (June–September) generally offer the best value — lower nightly rates and package deals — but this is also hurricane / tropical-storm season, so last-minute weather-driven cancellations can affect prices. Mid-week stays are often cheaper than weekend nights. Small boutique hotels and B&Bs can sell out quickly during events, while chain hotels and vacation rentals often advertise discounts in the low season; booking 60–90 days in advance for Winter travel is recommended, and 7–30 days ahead can yield deals in Summer if you’re flexible.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Key West is compact — walking, biking, and golf carts are popular. Driving and parking can be expensive and limited downtown.
To avoid crowds and high prices, aim for mid-week stays in shoulder seasons (late Spring or late Fall). Book key experiences (snorkel trips, airport transfers, specialty restaurants) in advance, bring reef-safe sunscreen, and consider renting a golf cart for convenient island mobility and local flavor.
