Best Time to Visit in Cairo

Seasonal guide to help you plan the perfect trip to in Cairo

Best Time to Visit

Winter

High Season

December–February and major event months (e.g., November for some festivals).

Value Season

June–August (summer) — lower hotel prices and fewer tourists.

Spring

3/5 recommended

March–May: Temperatures warm from the low-to-mid 20s°C (70s°F) into the high 20s–30°C (80s–90s°F). Khamsin dust/wind events typically occur in March and April and can reduce air quality and visibility.

Advantages

  • Warmer, mostly sunny weather good for daytime exploration early in the season.
  • Fewer visitors than peak winter months (outside of occasional school holidays).
  • Outdoor sites are comfortable for much of April and May.

Considerations

  • Khamsin sandstorms can be sudden and make pyramid views hazy; bring a mask and goggles if traveling in March–April.
  • Temperatures rise toward May; plan early tours to avoid afternoon heat.
  • Some cultural events tied to Easter/Sham el-Nessim change dates yearly.

Key Events in in Cairo

Ramadan and Eid (dates vary each year)

Nighttime Iftar meals and special Ramadan atmospheres in restaurants and hotels., Mosques and local neighborhoods are lively after sunset., Eid holidays cause domestic travel spikes and can affect availability and prices.

Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting; its Gregorian dates move yearly. It dramatically affects daily life — daytime business hours, restaurant operations, and social rhythms change. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and Eid al-Adha occurs later in the year.

Cairo International Film Festival

Film premieres, red-carpet events, and screenings across the city., Increased hotel demand and special cultural programming.

Usually held in November. One of Africa and the Middle East’s premier film events, attracting international guests, screenings, and galas.

Cairo International Book Fair

Massive book market, author talks, and special exhibits., Large crowds and increased local travel to the exhibition center.

Typically in January or February — a major regional publishing event held at the Cairo International Convention Centre.

Sham el-Nessim

Local food traditions, outdoor gatherings, and colorful public life., Parks and riverbank areas become very busy.

A national spring holiday that follows Coptic Easter — date varies each year. Families picnic in parks and along the Nile.

Coptic Christmas and Orthodox Christian Celebrations

Traditional services at historic churches, cultural events, and decorations in Coptic neighborhoods.

Coptic Christmas falls on January 7. Churches in Coptic Cairo hold special services and processions.

Weather Tips

Cairo has a hot desert climate. Always carry sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and a refillable water bottle. Expect strong sun and glare year-round. For desert excursions bring a light scarf or buff to protect against dust; pack layers for cool winter nights. For sandstorms, have a face covering and eye protection available.

Understanding in Cairo Prices

Hotel prices in Cairo fluctuate with international tourist seasons, major local events, and Ramadan. The busiest months (late October through April, especially December–February and around major events like the Cairo International Film Festival and international holidays) see higher occupancy and rates—expect 20–50% higher prices at mid- to high-range hotels. Summer (June–August) is the low-value season because temperatures soar, reducing leisure tourism; hotels often discount rooms by 20–40% but some boutique and luxury properties still maintain higher rates for business and international visitors. Ramadan can push domestic travel and dining demand, raising prices for hotels and restaurants in some periods; conversely, some hotels offer Ramadan packages. Book 2–3 months in advance for winter and major event periods; last-minute deals are more common in summer. Peak weekends (Friday–Saturday in Egypt) and national holidays also see short-term price spikes.

Essential Travel Tips for in Cairo Egypt

Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit

Transportation

Getting around Cairo combines metro, ride-hailing, taxis, and private drivers. Traffic can be dense; plan for extra travel time.

Transportation Tips

  • 1.Use the Cairo Metro for fast, cheap trips across central corridors — it’s efficient and avoids surface traffic (note: there are women-only cars during peak hours).
  • 2.Ride-hailing apps (Uber, Careem) are widely available and typically safer/clearer than hailing street taxis; agree on prices or use the meter for street taxis.
  • 3.Hire a private driver or guided tour for day trips to Giza, Saqqara and Dahshur to save time and avoid negotiating multiple pickups.
  • 4.Expect heavy traffic during morning and evening rush hours and on Friday afternoons/evenings; schedule activities accordingly.
  • 5.Allow extra time for airport transfers — Cairo traffic and security checks can add delays.

Pro Traveler Tip

For the best pyramid experience, book a licensed guide and schedule your visit at sunrise or late afternoon to avoid heat and crowds. Combine Giza with nearby sites like Saqqara and Memphis on a full-day private tour. Always confirm museum opening times and ticketing procedures in advance — lines for popular attractions are shorter early in the morning.
