Spring
Spring (cherry blossom) and Golden Week; parts of Autumn (foliage weekends and festival dates).
Late Summer (August, excluding festival dates) and Winter (December–February) outside New Year provide better hotel/value availability.
March–May. Late March–early April is cherry blossom peak in many Tokyo parks; cool-to-mild temperatures with occasional rain.
Late March–early April. Viewing parties in parks like Ueno, Shinjuku Gyoen, Yoyogi, and along rivers.
Late April–early May. Multiple national holidays clustered into a week of heavy domestic travel.
January, May, and September. The bi-monthly tournaments held in Tokyo draw local and international spectators.
February. Major international marathon causing road closures and spectator zones in central Tokyo.
July–August. Large fireworks displays and neighborhood matsuri across the city, including Sumida River Fireworks.
Late December–early January. Traditional shrine visits, special meals, and citywide quietness around major businesses.
Expect a distinct rainy season (early June–mid July) and high summer humidity. Typhoon season peaks late summer to early fall (August–September) — monitor forecasts, allow buffer days for travel, and have flexible bookings. Winters are cool and dry with clear skies. Always carry a compact umbrella, layered clothing for variable temperatures, and a portable charger for apps and navigation.
Tokyo hotel and transport prices vary by season and event: peaks during Cherry Blossom (late March–early April), Golden Week (late April–early May), and important conventions or tournaments. Weekends and major festival dates push rates up citywide. Business districts see steady corporate pricing Monday–Thursday, while leisure neighborhoods (Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza) spike on weekends. Budget options (business hotels, hostels, capsule hotels) remain available but fill quickly during high season. Booking 2–3+ months ahead for spring and major events is recommended; last-minute deals are more likely in Winter (outside New Year) and mid-to-late Summer (excluding festival dates). Use Suica/Pasmo for transit savings; consider staying slightly outside central wards (10–20 minutes by train) for lower nightly rates.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Tokyo's public transport is extensive, punctual and the best way to get around. Major networks: JR (Yamanote), Tokyo Metro, Toei subways, private railways; two main airports (Narita, Haneda).
Get a Suica/Pasmo and a portable Wi‑Fi or eSIM on arrival, use luggage forwarding (takkyubin) for hassle-free transfers, and plan Shinkansen reservations ahead — Tokyo is efficient but crowded, so early planning saves time.
