Seasonal guide to help you plan the perfect trip to in Cairo
Summer
November–February (Winter)
June–August (Summer)
March–May: Temperatures warm up from mild to hot; March and April are pleasant for day trips, while late April and May can see rising heat and occasional khamsin (wind) dust events.
Major film festival held in Cairo, typically in November; draws international filmmakers, critics, and cinema lovers.
One of the largest book fairs in the Arabic-speaking world, usually held in January; a major draw for local and regional visitors.
Ramadan is a month-long lunar religious observance; dates shift each year. It culminates in Eid al-Fitr. Eid al-Adha also moves with the lunar calendar. Both affect restaurant hours, public life, and travel patterns.
Coptic Christmas (January 7) and other Christian and Islamic holidays bring religious services and processions in parts of the city.
Cairo’s climate is desert: expect hot, dry summers and mild winters with very little annual rainfall. Always carry sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. In summer, schedule outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon/evening to avoid peak heat. During winter, layer up for cool nights and early-morning chill. If traveling during khamsin (spring dust storms), carry a scarf and eye protection and check flight/transport updates for possible disruptions.
Hotel prices in Cairo fluctuate by season, major religious holidays (Ramadan, Eid), international events (Cairo International Film Festival, Book Fair), and school holidays. High-season rates typically occur from November through February and around Christmas/New Year when European tourists arrive; expect rates to be 20–50% higher than average. Luxury hotels may spike more around international conferences and Ramadan (when many visitors book if planning to break the fast in a hotel). Summer (June–August) is traditionally the value season: extreme heat reduces demand and many hotels drop rates by 20–40%. Shoulder months (March–May and September–November) vary: March–April and October–November can see steady demand with moderate pricing. Booking window: for peak winter months and major events, reserve 1–3 months in advance; for value-season summer travel, you can often find good last-minute deals. Weekends and local holiday periods can also push prices up, and rooms near major sites (Giza, downtown Zamalek) tend to cost more than those further out.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Cairo has a mix of public and private transport: an efficient metro for many central routes, plentiful taxis, ride-hailing apps (Uber, Careem), buses, and limited commuter rail. Traffic is heavy — allow extra time.
Book early-morning pyramid tours (before 9:00) to avoid crowds and heat; hire a licensed Egyptologist guide at Giza and the Egyptian Museum for richer context. Purchase a local SIM or eSIM for maps and ride apps, and carry reusable water and electrolyte packets for hot days. If traveling during Ramadan, embrace the evening cultural experience but verify attraction opening times in advance.
