New York’s weather varies widely by season—layering is essential year-round. Comfortable walking shoes are a must. Summer: light breathable clothing, sun protection, refillable water bottle. Winter: warm insulated coat, hat, gloves, waterproof boots for snow/ice. Spring/Fall: bring a light jacket and an umbrella for sudden showers.
New York City hotel prices fluctuate significantly by season, neighborhood, and local events. Prices peak around major holidays (late December for Christmas and New Year’s Eve), major events (UN General Assembly in September, Fashion Week in February and September, and the US Open in late August/early September), and large conventions. Summer (June–August) sees high demand from leisure travelers, especially in Manhattan and near tourist hubs (Times Square, Midtown, Lower Manhattan). Value opportunities appear in January–February after the holidays and parts of early December (excluding holiday weekends). Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods, as well as Midtown-adjacent business hotels, vary by proximity to transit and events—Airbnb and boutique hotels can offer savings but can surge during events. Weekend rates are typically higher in Manhattan and for hotels near major attractions. Advance booking (especially for November and December events) and flexible dates help secure better rates.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Public transit (subway and buses) is the fastest, cheapest way to get around Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Taxis and rideshares are convenient for late nights, heavy luggage, or group travel.
Buy an attraction pass only if you plan to visit multiple paid sites in a short time; otherwise, pick a few must-see attractions and sprinkle in neighborhood walks and free sights (High Line, Staten Island Ferry, Central Park) to avoid rush and maximize value.
