Expect wide seasonal variation: humid, hot summers; mild springs and falls; cold, windy winters with occasional snow. Pack layers year-round, a compact umbrella, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen for summer, and a warm coat, hat, gloves, and waterproof footwear in winter. Check forecasts before travel and allow time for weather-related transit delays.
Hotel prices in New York City are highly seasonal and event-driven. Peak rates occur during summer (June–August) and the winter holiday season (late November–December) when tourists, holiday shoppers, and business travelers converge. Large events and conferences (UN General Assembly in September, New Year’s Eve in Times Square, Fashion Week in February and September, the US Open in late August/early September, the NYC Marathon and Thanksgiving week) cause localized spikes in rates and limited availability. Weekends are generally more expensive than weekdays in many neighborhoods, though business hubs like Midtown can see higher weekday corporate rates. Neighborhood and property type matter: Manhattan (especially Midtown, Times Square, Chelsea) commands the highest prices; Brooklyn boutique hotels can be more competitive; long-term rental platforms and budget hotels in Queens or Jersey City offer value. Book well in advance for major events and holidays; last-minute deals sometimes appear in shoulder seasons (late winter/early spring) but come with availability risk.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Extensive public transit (MTA subway & buses), commuter rails (LIRR, NJ Transit, Metro-North), numerous taxis/ride-hail options, bike-share (Citi Bike), and pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods.
Buy tickets and make reservations in advance for popular attractions (Broadway, Statue of Liberty ferry, top museums) and consider visiting early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak crowds; explore outer borough neighborhoods (Williamsburg, DUMBO, Astoria, Jackson Heights, Harlem) for a more local experience.
