Summer
Summer (June–August) and the December holiday season (late November–early January).
Winter (January–February) for lower hotel rates and fewer tourists.
March–May: Temperatures moderate from cool to warm, trees and parks green up, and outdoor programming resumes—ideal for walking, rooftop bars, and outdoor markets.
Late December/early January celebration centered on the Times Square ball drop with large crowds and street closures.
Annual late-November parade with giant balloons, floats, marching bands, and celebrity performers.
June celebrations culminating in the Pride March, with parties, performances, and strong community presence across Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Early November marathon drawing elite and recreational runners from around the world, with spectator-lined route across the five boroughs.
Spring film festival (April) showcasing independent films, panels, and premieres with celebrity appearances.
Semiannual industry events (February and September) featuring runway shows, presentations, and industry parties that influence hotel rates and demand in Midtown and Meatpacking neighborhoods.
Dress in layers year-round. Summer brings heat and humidity—carry water, sunscreen, and light breathable clothing. Winter can be bitterly cold with wind—insulated coat, hat, gloves, and waterproof footwear are essential. Spring and Fall are variable—pack a light jacket, umbrella, and adaptable layers. Check forecast frequently and plan outdoor activities for milder times of day.
Hotel prices in New York City swing with seasonality, major events, and neighborhood. Peak demand periods—summer, major holidays (late November–early January), and marquee events (Fashion Week, Fleet Week, major conventions)—drive rates up across Manhattan and popular Brooklyn neighborhoods. Midtown and Times Square properties typically command the highest premiums. Value can be found in winter (January–February) after the holiday rush, and by booking neighborhoods outside Midtown (Long Island City, Downtown Brooklyn, Jersey City). Booking 30–90 days in advance helps, but last-minute deals sometimes appear mid-week in low-demand periods. Weekends are generally more expensive than weekdays in leisure-heavy seasons; during business-heavy periods (midweek in spring/fall), weekday rates can spike. Special-event weekends (Marathon, Pride, Thanksgiving weekend) often sell out months ahead.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Subway and buses are the fastest, most cost-effective ways to get around; rideshares and taxis are convenient for late-night or heavy luggage trips.
Buy tickets for Broadway shows, top museums (MoMA, Met), and observation decks in advance. Use neighborhood bases (e.g., Lower East Side, Williamsburg, Long Island City) to save on accommodation while staying near transit. For cheaper museum entry, plan visits during pay-what-you-wish hours or free days when available, and use city and combo passes if visiting multiple attractions in a short timeframe.
