Seasonal guide to help you plan the perfect trip to in Lyon
Fall
June–August (warm weather and festivals) and early December (Fête des Lumières).
January–February and late November (excluding the days of Fête des Lumières) offer the best hotel bargains and quieter streets.
March–May: Temperatures usually range from about 8–20°C. Trees and parks (Parc de la Tête d'Or) bloom, terraces reopen, and the city wakes up after winter. Occasional rain and variable days mean layered clothing is wise.
Early December: Lyon’s world-famous light festival transforms the city with artistic light installations across squares, façades, and public spaces over several nights around December 8.
June–July: A summer cultural festival held at the ancient Roman theatre on Fourvière hill featuring music, theater, dance, and cinema performances.
Late May: An electronic and indie-music festival across clubs and public spaces in Lyon, drawing international DJs and music fans.
Autumn (every other year): The Biennale alternates between contemporary art and dance, showcasing major institutional and satellite exhibitions across the city and galleries.
June 21: Nationwide music celebration with free concerts in streets, squares, clubs, and bars across Lyon.
December: Several markets pop up, with artisanal stalls, food stalls, and a festive atmosphere—complements the Fête des Lumières period.
Layer clothing year-round: lightweight layers for spring/fall, sun protection (hat, sunscreen) for summer, and a warm waterproof coat plus insulated footwear for winter. Bring a compact umbrella and comfortable walking shoes; check forecasts on Météo-France before excursions and prepare for occasional river breezes along the Rhône and Saône.
Hotel and short-term rental prices in Lyon fluctuate with tourist seasons and major events. Peak pricing occurs in summer (June–August) and around the Fête des Lumières in early December; prices also rise during major conferences at Lyon Part-Dieu and festival weekends (Nuits de Fourvière, Biennale years). Shoulder seasons (late spring and early fall) offer moderate rates and pleasant weather. The best value is typically mid-January through February and late November (excluding the Fête des Lumières period), when hotels run promotions. Weekends are more expensive in the Presqu'île and Vieux Lyon; business travel can push midweek rates up near Part-Dieu. Booking 2–3 months ahead for summer and 3–6 months for major events is recommended; last-minute deals exist outside peak times but are risky during festivals.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Lyon has an extensive public transport network (TCL): 4 metro lines, multiple tram lines, bus routes, funiculars to Fourvière, and the Vélo'v bike-share system. Lyon Part-Dieu is the main rail hub; Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport is connected by the Rhônexpress tram.
Buy a Lyon City Card (1–2–3 days) for bundled public transport and museum access if you plan on visiting multiple attractions. Stay in Presqu'île for central access to shopping, nightlife, and transport, Vieux Lyon for historic charm, or Croix-Rousse for a bohemian vibe and proximity to traboules. Book hotels well in advance for summer and the Fête des Lumières; reserve tables for bouchons. Take a half-day trip to Beaujolais for wine tasting or to Pérouges for a medieval village experience.
