Fall
Spring, Fall, and the December holiday period (mid-December–early January).
Late January–February (post-holiday winter) and some late-summer midweek periods offer lower hotel rates and fewer crowds.
March–May: temperatures often range from cool to pleasantly warm; trees and parks come alive, and outdoor dining returns in earnest.
One of the world's most famous countdowns — huge crowds and extensive police/security measures.
Massive parade down Central Park West and 6th Avenue featuring floats, balloons, and performers.
One of the largest Pride celebrations worldwide, with a parade, parties, and neighborhood events.
High-profile film festival with premieres, panels, and neighborhood screenings (typically April).
Major tennis Grand Slam tournament in late August–early September in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park.
High-fashion shows and events in February and September drawing industry insiders and media.
Major international marathon in November that traverses the five boroughs.
International diplomatic event in September that brings global delegations and increased demand for accommodations near Midtown East.
Layering is essential year-round: temperatures can swing widely during Spring and Fall. In summer, bring light breathable clothing, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle; in winter, pack a warm coat, hat, gloves, and waterproof boots. Always check the 3–7 day forecast before travel, and allow extra time for transit delays during snow or heavy rain.
Hotel and short-term rental prices in New York City fluctuate strongly with season, major events, and neighborhood. Peak demand tends to occur in spring (April–May) and fall (September–November) when the weather is best and cultural calendars are full; the holiday season (mid-December through New Year) also drives steep spikes. Large events — Fashion Week, UN General Assembly, the NYC Marathon, Pride, the US Open, and major conventions — create localized surges. Weekends are typically more expensive than weekdays in Manhattan; peripheral boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens) and nearby cities (Jersey City, Hoboken) are often significantly cheaper. Book early (6–8+ weeks) for peak windows and 3–6 months ahead for major events; monitor prices and set alerts. Consider weekday stays, alternative neighborhoods, or serviced apartments/hostels for better value.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
New York’s public transit (subway + buses) is often the fastest and cheapest way to get around Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Taxis, rideshares, commuter rails, and ferries provide important supplemental routes.
Buy attraction combos (CityPASS, New York Explorer Pass) for savings and skip-the-line benefits for top sites; book Broadway and special-event tickets well in advance, or use same-day discount services (TKTS) for last-minute deals. Stay in a centrally located neighborhood for walking access (or choose Brooklyn/Queens for better value), and pack comfortable walking shoes — you’ll walk more than you think.
