Seasonal guide to help you plan the perfect trip to in Tampa
Winter
Winter (Dec–Feb) — snowbirds, holidays, and dry, comfortable weather.
Summer (Jun–Aug) — lower hotel rates and deals, but hotter, more humid and storm-prone.
March–May: warming temperatures, lower humidity than summer, lots of festivals and spring-break crowds in March and early April. Great beach days and outdoor events; pollen levels can be high in March and April.
Tampa's signature event — a large pirate-themed parade and citywide celebration held in late January or early February.
Annual state fair held at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa, typically in February.
A multi-stage music festival in March that attracts national and local acts, held downtown or nearby parks.
College football bowl game held at Raymond James Stadium around New Year's/early January, drawing fans to the city.
Annual Pride celebration in June with a parade and park festival, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community.
Pack for humidity and sun. Bring lightweight, breathable clothing, a rain jacket for sudden summer/fall storms, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, and a portable umbrella. Monitor hurricane forecasts during Jun–Nov and buy travel insurance if visiting during the hurricane season. For outdoor sightseeing schedule mornings or late afternoons to avoid midday heat and storms.
Tampa's hotel and travel prices fluctuate with a clear seasonal pattern and major events. Winter (Dec–Feb) is high season due to 'snowbirds' and holiday travel; expect higher nightly rates, limited availability, and premium weekend pricing. Spring (Mar–May) sees spikes around spring break, college events, and festivals (Gasparilla Music Festival), especially in March. Summer (Jun–Aug) is generally the best value for hotels—many properties discount rates despite high demand for beaches—though resort fees and weekend premiums apply. Major events (Gasparilla, large conventions at the Tampa Convention Center, college bowl games, and any NFL/Super Bowl-related activity) drive sharp, short-term price increases. Hurricane season (Jun–Nov) can depress last-minute prices but adds travel risk. To save money: book 30–90 days ahead for summer, 60–120 days ahead for winter/festival travel; consider midweek stays, nearby neighborhoods (Seminole Heights, West Tampa, and Tampa Heights) or nearby cities (St. Petersburg, Clearwater) for lower rates; watch for package deals that bundle flights and car rentals.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Tampa is a spread-out metro where a rental car or rideshare is often the most convenient option, though downtown and tourist corridors have public transit and the TECO Streetcar.
If your priority is beach time with calm waters and sunsets, base yourself in St. Pete or Clearwater and make day trips to Tampa. For nightlife, food, and museums, stay downtown or in Hyde Park/South Tampa. Book lodging early for Gasparilla and major sporting events; for better value, aim for midweek stays or neighborhoods within a short drive but with lower nightly rates.
