Fall
Summer plus major holiday periods (late November–early January) and major event weeks (UNGA, Fashion Week).
Mid-January through February (excluding long holiday weekends) and parts of late August when school travel dips.
March–May: Mild temperatures, blooming parks (Central Park, Brooklyn Botanic Garden), and many outdoor activities. Shoulder-season for tourism with improving weather; occasional rain. Great for walking neighborhoods and rooftop bars before peak summer crowds.
Check weather conditions before traveling to New York (New York).
New York City hotel and travel prices vary widely by season, neighborhood, and events. Midtown Manhattan and areas near major attractions (Times Square, Central Park, theater district) carry premium rates year-round. Hotels and short-term rentals spike during major events (New Year’s Eve, UN General Assembly in September, New York Fashion Week, Thanksgiving week, and large conventions). Weekends are consistently more expensive than weekdays, and booking 30–90 days in advance generally secures better rates. Budget travelers can save by staying in borough neighborhoods (Brooklyn, Queens) with easy transit access, or by booking during low-demand windows (mid-January through February, excluding holiday weekends).
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Subway and buses are the fastest, most affordable ways to get around. Taxis and rideshares are widely available but slower during peak hours; driving and parking are costly and often unnecessary.
Buy tickets online in advance for major attractions (Statue of Liberty/ELL, Top of the Rock/Empire State Building, Broadway) and consider city passes if you plan to visit multiple sites; they can save time in lines and money if used wisely.
