Fall
Late spring through summer (April–August) and the holiday period (late November–early January) when tourism peaks and prices are highest.
Late January through March (post-holiday winter) offers the best value—lower hotel rates and fewer tourists, though weather is colder.
March–May: Temperatures warm from cool to pleasantly mild, cherry blossoms and many outdoor attractions start up. Great for parks, walking tours, and rooftop bars as patios open.
Iconic countdown and ball drop attracting huge crowds; heavy security and road closures.
Annual parade featuring giant balloons, floats, marching bands and celebrity performances—massive crowds along the route.
One of the world’s largest marathons in November, with large spectator crowds and partial road closures across the five boroughs.
June celebrations of LGBTQ+ community with events, parades, and parties throughout the city.
Fashion industry events in February and September draw designers, buyers, and media—street-level celebrity sightings and pop-ups.
Spring film festival with screenings, panels, and celebrity events centered mainly in lower Manhattan.
Series of free and ticketed outdoor concerts and film nights across parks in the city during summer.
Layering is key—winters need warm coats, hats, and gloves; summers require breathable fabrics, sun protection, and hydration. Carry a compact umbrella year-round for sudden rain. Comfortable walking shoes are essential; many neighborhoods are best explored on foot.
New York City is one of the world’s pricier destinations, but prices vary widely by neighborhood, season, and events. Manhattan (especially Midtown, Times Square, and SoHo) commands the highest hotel rates; Brooklyn and Queens offer more budget-friendly options with longer transit times. Hotel prices spike during major events (Fashion Week, New Year’s Eve, the Thanksgiving weekend, NYC Marathon, major conventions) and on weekends. Weekday corporate travel can keep rates high Monday–Thursday in business districts. Short-term rentals and Airbnbs follow similar seasonality but can be more cost-effective for groups or longer stays. Advance booking (30–90 days) helps; last-minute deals are possible in low season but risky during city events. Dining and attractions have steady pricing—expect higher menu and ticket prices in tourist hubs. Public transit is inexpensive compared with taxis/rideshares, so staying a little farther out and using transit can save money.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Public transit (subway and buses) is the fastest, most cost-effective way to get around Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Taxis and rideshares are convenient for late nights, door-to-door trips, or luggage-heavy travel.
Buy a multi-attraction pass if you plan to visit many paid sites (compare New York CityPASS, Explorer Pass, and C3/C5 options). Book Broadway shows and popular museum timed-entry tickets in advance, and download transit and map apps for offline use. If you want local flavor, take a neighborhood walking tour (food, architecture, or history-focused) rather than only hitting marquee sights.
