Layering is essential year-round: a lightweight waterproof layer in Spring, breathable fabrics and sun protection in Summer, a warm jacket for Fall evenings, and insulated outerwear with a hat/gloves for Winter. Bring comfortable walking shoes, an umbrella for sudden showers, and check daily forecasts—MTA service can be affected by heavy snow or heat-related track issues.
New York City hotel and lodging prices vary strongly with season, neighborhood, and major events. Peak pricing occurs during late spring (May–June), fall (September–November) and the winter holiday period (mid-December through New Year’s). Summer (June–August) also sees high demand, especially in Manhattan and tourist-heavy neighborhoods. Prices drop in January and early February after the holidays — this is the best time for bargains. Weekends and special-event weekends (Fashion Week, UN General Assembly, major concerts, marathon weekend) push rates higher, while weekday corporate travel can keep midweek prices elevated. Neighborhood matters: Manhattan (Midtown/Times Square) is most expensive; Brooklyn (Williamsburg, DUMBO) and Queens (Long Island City) can be cheaper but may add commute time. Short-term rentals follow similar patterns and can spike during big events. Booking 2–3 months ahead for peak season, and 1–2 months for shoulder season, is recommended. Use price alerts, consider refundable rates, and check cancellation policies. Expect surge pricing for ride-hailing during bad weather, rush hours, and special events.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Use the subway and buses for fastest city travel; taxis and rideshares are convenient for nights or group travel. Walking is often quickest in dense neighborhoods.
Buy attraction passes (e.g., CityPASS) for savings and faster entry to major sites, but also reserve timed-entry tickets for popular attractions (Top of the Rock, Statue of Liberty ferry, museum special exhibits) in advance. Build blocks of activities by neighborhood to minimize transit time (e.g., Midtown day: MoMA, Times Square, Rockefeller; Lower Manhattan day: 9/11 Memorial, One World Observatory, Battery Park).
