Washington, D.C. has a humid subtropical climate: hot, humid summers with thunderstorms; mild-to-cool springs and falls that can change quickly; and cold winters with occasional snow. Pack lightweight layers and sun protection for summer, a waterproof midlayer for spring/fall, and a warm coat plus waterproof footwear for winter. Check forecasts before walking the National Mall—afternoon storms can appear quickly in summer.
Hotel and short-term rental prices in Washington, D.C. swing with seasonal tourism, federal government schedules, and major events. Peak rates occur during the National Cherry Blossom Festival (late March–April), spring and fall conference seasons, presidential inaugurations, and national holidays like July 4th. Summer weekends and major festivals (Smithsonian Folklife, Capital Pride) also push prices up. Value periods tend to be mid-winter (January–early February) and late summer (August) when government and school travel dips. Weekday business travel can raise rates Monday–Thursday; weekends may be cheaper outside event windows. Booking 2–3 months ahead is usually sufficient, but for Cherry Blossom, major festivals, or inauguration-year travel, book 4–6+ months in advance.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Use Metro and buses for most sightseeing; avoid driving in the downtown core when possible.
Plan monument visits at sunrise or early morning to avoid crowds and midday heat, reserve timed-entry passes for high-demand attractions (e.g., National Museum of African American History and Culture), and monitor the National Park Service and event calendars for scheduled closures or large events that affect access.
