Fall
Spring (March–May) and Fall (September–November)
Summer (June–August) and Winter (December–February)
March–May: Mild days (60s–80s°F / ~15–30°C), cool nights, abundant wildflowers and clear skies. Excellent for hiking, photography, and outdoor activities.
A respected regional film festival that draws independent filmmakers, visiting talent, and film fans for screenings, panels, and awards.
A large outdoor arts fair featuring local and regional visual artists, live music, and food vendors.
Sedona hosts numerous yoga, meditation, and wellness retreats and short festivals across the year—popular because of the town's reputation as a spiritual and healing destination.
Because of clear skies and low light pollution in surrounding areas, astronomy groups and amateur star parties happen periodically, especially in summer and winter when skies are clear.
Expect large diurnal temperature swings—cool mornings and evenings, warm or hot afternoons. Bring sun protection (wide-brim hat, high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm), light layers for daytime, warm layers for evenings, and rain gear during monsoon season. Always carry 1–2 liters of water per person for short hikes and more for longer treks. Check local weather and flash-flood warnings before entering washes or slot canyons.
Sedona's hotel and lodging prices are highly seasonal and tied to weather and events. Peak prices occur in spring (wildflower season) and fall (mild temperatures and foliage), when demand from hikers, photographers, and wellness travelers is highest. Summer (especially July–August) sees lower base rates because of heat and monsoon storms, though holiday weekends and special events can push rates up. Winter (December–February) tends to offer the best deals overall, except during major holiday weeks (Christmas/New Year) and school vacation periods. Weekends cost more than weekdays year-round; last-minute bookings can be expensive in peak windows. Vacation rental rates spike for popular properties with red-rock views; booking 2–3 months ahead for spring/fall is recommended. Many hotels offer mid-week packages in shoulder seasons, and some tour operators discount off-peak months. Expect extra fees for resort amenities, parking, and activity bookings (jeep tours, guided hikes).
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Driving is the most practical way to access and get around Sedona; the nearest major airport is Phoenix Sky Harbor (about 2 hours by car). Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is closer (~45–60 minutes) but has fewer commercial flights. Shuttle services and regional buses exist but are limited.
For the best light and fewer people, hike for sunrise or late afternoon for golden-hour photography. Buy or display a Red Rock Pass if you plan to use popular trailheads repeatedly. Book popular guided activities (jeep tours, hot-air balloon alternatives, and photography workshops) 4–8 weeks ahead for spring and fall, but you can often find last-minute availability in summer and winter.
