Seasonal guide to help you plan the perfect trip to in Cairo
Fall
November–February (coolest, busiest)
June–August (hottest, lower international demand)
March–May: warming days, comfortable mornings, occasional khamsin (dry, dusty wind) in late March/April.
Islamic holy month observed across Egypt; the calendar shifts ~11 days earlier each year.
Major religious holidays following Ramadan and later in the Islamic calendar; dates move yearly.
Annual film festival typically held in November, attracting filmmakers and visitors worldwide.
Usually held in January/February—one of the largest book fairs in the Arab world.
Ancient Egyptian spring festival celebrated nationwide, usually in April.
Pack light breathable clothing for daytime, a hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen year-round. Bring a light jacket for winter nights and a scarf for dusty khamsin winds in spring. Always carry bottled water and a refillable bottle with a filter if you prefer. Check forecasts for occasional heavy winds or rare rain in winter; plan outdoor activities in early morning or late afternoon during hot months.
Hotel prices in Cairo vary with international high season (cool months), major religious holidays, and local events. Expect highest rates around November–February (holiday season and peak tourism), during major events (Cairo International Film Festival, Book Fair) and around Christmas/New Year. Summer (June–August) is generally the lowest-value season for travelers because extreme heat reduces international arrivals, so many hotels drop rates or offer packages—however, upscale hotels with pools and Nile views may stay relatively expensive year-round. Domestic holidays and long weekends (including Ramadan-related travel patterns and Eid holidays) can push prices up unexpectedly. Location matters: hotels near the Pyramids, Nile Corniche, or downtown (Zamalek, Garden City) typically command a premium over outskirts. Booking 30–60 days ahead for peak months helps; last-minute deals appear in off-peak heat months but availability drops during events.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Use a mix of metro, ride-hailing apps, licensed taxis, and private drivers for flexible city travel; allow extra time for traffic.
Book a guided early-morning or sunset visit to the Giza Plateau to avoid crowds and heat; stay in a hotel with a rooftop view of the Pyramids or Nile for memorable evenings. Purchase tickets to major museums in advance when possible and hire a licensed Egyptologist guide for in-depth context at archaeological sites.
