Check forecasts before travel and allow extra time for transit during storms.
Hotel and short-term rental prices in New York City fluctuate widely with seasonality and major events. Peak pricing occurs during late spring and early fall (when weather is best), throughout summer, and around major holiday periods (mid-December through New Year's). Prices also spike around major events — New Year's Eve, Fashion Week (February and September), the UN General Assembly (September), large conventions, and major sports or cultural events. Booking in advance and checking for weekday vs. weekend differentials can yield savings; consider neighborhoods a short subway ride from Manhattan for better value.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Mass transit is the fastest and most cost-effective way to get around Manhattan and the outer boroughs; taxis and rideshares are convenient but can be slower during rush hours.
Book Broadway tickets, popular attraction time slots (Observatories, Statue of Liberty ferry, museum special exhibits), and sought-after restaurant reservations well in advance. Use apps (MTA, Google Maps, CityMapper) to optimize routes and check live subway service changes. Consider staying near a subway hub to maximize time spent exploring versus commuting.
