Fall
Spring and parts of Summer (Golden Week, Obon) are high season; New Year period also drives high demand.
Winter (excluding New Year) and early Summer shoulder periods offer better rates and fewer tourists.
Late March through May. Mild temperatures (10–22°C), cherry blossoms bloom from late March to early April in Tokyo, and the city is full of hanami (flower-viewing) crowds and outdoor activities.
The annual bloom of sakura draws locals and visitors to parks across Tokyo for picnics and evening illuminations.
A cluster of national holidays (late April–early May) when Japanese travel domestically, causing heavy crowds and full bookings.
One of Tokyo's largest Shinto festivals held in Asakusa in May, featuring portable shrines (mikoshi) parades and lively street scenes.
A major summer fireworks festival drawing huge crowds along the Sumida River (typically late July).
A major international marathon held in March that attracts elite athletes and mass runners worldwide.
Professional sumo tournaments held in Tokyo in January, May, and September, offering a chance to see sumo bouts and rituals.
Japan's most important holiday; many businesses close for several days and locals travel to family and shrines.
Cultural events and arts festivals in October–November with screenings and performances across the city.
Pack layers for variable spring and autumn days. In summer bring breathable clothing, sun protection, and a compact umbrella (June rainy season and occasional typhoons July–September). Winter requires a warm coat, hat, and gloves for evenings. Comfortable walking shoes are essential year-round. If traveling during festivals or holidays, expect crowds and plan for earlier arrival times and longer transit.
Tokyo hotel prices vary strongly by season, neighborhood, and event. Peak pricing occurs during Spring (cherry blossom) and Golden Week, major festivals, and around New Year. Business weekdays in central neighborhoods (Marunouchi, Ginza, Shinjuku) stay expensive year-round; budget options and capsule hotels in Asakusa, Ueno and Ikebukuro are cheaper. Weekend rates climb in nightlife hubs (Shibuya, Roppongi). Advance booking (4–8 weeks) is essential for peak times, and last-minute deals are rare during big events. Apartment rentals and Airbnb-style options can offer value for longer stays. Hotel categories: luxury (5★) cluster in Marunouchi/Ginza; 3★–4★ offer best balance in Shinjuku or Shinagawa; 2★–3★ capsule and business hotels provide low-cost, compact options.
Insider advice to help you make the most of your visit
Tokyo's public transport is fast, punctual, and extensive — trains and subways are the primary way to get around; buses and taxis fill gaps.
Choose your base strategically: Shinjuku or Shibuya for nightlife and transport links; Ginza or Marunouchi for luxury and proximity to central attractions; Asakusa/Ueno for budget and traditional Tokyo. Buy a pocket Wi‑Fi or local eSIM for navigation and train schedules, and start early at major attractions (Meiji Jingu, Tsukiji outer market, teamLab Borderless-type exhibits) to avoid crowds. If you’re short on time, plan one neighborhood per day and use local bakeries/konbini for quick breakfasts to maximize sightseeing time.
